Laverne C. “Sonny” Sanders, 80, of Hanover, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Arden Courts of Susquehanna in Harrisburg. He was the husband of Virginia A. “Jenny” (Hahn) Sanders to whom he was married 57 years. Born August 23, 1938 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Merle Clifford Sanders and Pauline (Leppo) Sanders. Sonny was retired from Rental Uniform Service with 20 years of service. After retirement he worked at the McSherrystown Home Association and Cedar Ridge Golf Course. He was a 1956 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Hanover. He proudly served in the US Navy after high school. Sonny was a member of Trinity UCC, Hanover, McSherrystown Moose, life member of McSherrystown Home Association and the Hanover Republican Club. He enjoyed camping, boating, playing cards, golfing and spending time with his friends and family, especially his four grandsons. Surviving in addition to his wife is his daughter, Julie St Pierre and husband Thomas of York; his daughter-in-law, Marie Sanders of Hanover; four grandsons, Conner and Brady St Pierre and Jayden and Cameron Sanders; and two siblings, Jackie Zepp and Richard Sanders both of Hanover. He was preceded in death by a son, Troy S. Sanders and two brothers, Raymond and Merle Sanders. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 11, 2019 at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Avenue, McSherrystown with Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Relatives and friends will be received 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons. Donations in memory of Sonny may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Dr, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or ALS Foundation, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Rd., Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
