William M. Sheaffer

William M. Sheaffer, 85, of Hanover, died Thursday, September 13, 2018 at his home peacefully, with his family by his side. He was the husband of Dorothy V. “Dottie” (Shaffer) Sheaffer his beloved wife of 21 years.  Born December 5, 1932 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Agnes C. (Bunty) Sheaffer.  Bill was a lifetime member of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church in McSherrystown and a 1951 graduate of Delone Catholic High School where he earned the nickname “Crazy Legs” and held the school record for 39 years for the most touchdowns in a season. He went on to Temple University on a football scholarship and played for the Temple Owls. He was drafted into the US Army and served with the military police patrolling the Autobahn in Germany. He returned to Hanover and started a family, raising 7 children in 8 years’ time. Bill retired as a regional sales manager in 1990 from S&H Green Stamp Co, receiving numerous sales awards including top 10 in the country. Bill then owned a commercial landscaping business until 2004.  He volunteered with the Hanover Red Cross for 30 years as a water safety instructor/trainer and taught Red Cross swimming. Bill was an avid exotic car enthusiast, owning and racing 10 Ferrari’s through the years and selling his racing 275LM Ferrari to Sonny Bono in the 1960’s. He was an athlete playing in tournaments for the Hanover Tennis Club and inspired his children to become tennis enthusiasts and runners. Later in life he took up golf in which he had a love/hate relationship. Bill was a member of the Hanover YMCA and loved the time working out and having coffee with his “Y” Buddies. He was also a member of the Hanover Elks No.763.  Surviving in addition to his beloved wife, Dottie, are five children; Diane Adams, Dawn Jackson, Mark Sheaffer and wife Mimi and Glenn Sheaffer all of Hilton Head/Bluffton SC, Wynn LaLonde of Newport News, VA, his first wife and mother of his children, Gloria (Penn) Sheaffer of Sun City, SC, 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, three brothers; Patrick Sheaffer and wife Jeannie, Christopher Sheaffer and wife Ellen all of Hanover, David Sheaffer of New Oxford and Sister-in-law; Barb Sheaffer of York. He was preceded in death by a son Gregory Sheaffer, daughter, Patrice Sheaffer, wife Jacqueline (Trone) Sheaffer, stepdaughter Michelle Frock and siblings Robert, Michael and Constance Sheaffer.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown with Rev. Charles L. Persing as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Avenue, McSherrystown.  Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews; Eric, Matthew, James, Robert, Joseph, Thomas and Adam Sheaffer.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bill may be made to Not One More, PO Box 95, Dover, PA 17315.
