Leonard Burke Hicks

Leonard Burke Hicks, 84, of McSherrystown, entered into God’s eternal care on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at his home. He was the husband of Phyllis J. (Bolin) Hicks to whom he was married 60 years.  Born January 8, 1934 in Easton, PA, he was the son of the late Leonard C. and Catherine I. (Burke) Hicks.  Burke was the owner of the Leonard B. Hicks Funeral Home in McSherrystown from 1969 to 1996. He was a 1952 graduate of Delone Catholic High School, McSherrystown, 1953 graduate of Eckel’s School of Mortuary Science, Philadelphia. He served his funeral apprenticeship in Philadelphia and then served in the US Navy as a Field Medic at Camp Pendleton, CA. Upon returning from serving his country Burke was a funeral director in the Philadelphia area from 1958 to 1964 and then in Hanover from 1965 to 1969. He was a member of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown where he served as an usher for many years, a life member of McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, McSherrystown Home Association and SAVES, a member of the Capital City Funeral Directors Assoc., PA Funeral Directors Assoc., and the National Funeral Directors Assoc. He enjoyed wood working and spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.  Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Karen A. Schaale and husband Jon of Dover, Marie E. Sanders, Stephanie J. Fissel and husband Rick and David B. Hicks all of Hanover; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his brother, Lawrence C. Hicks of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his twin sister Patricia Weikert.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2018 at Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown with the Rev. Charles L. Persing as celebrant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received at the church Friday from 9 a.m. to the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA of Hanover/Spring Grove, 440 N. Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331 or Annunciation Church Memorial Fund, 26 N. Third Street, McSherrystown, PA 17344.
