Merle W. Sanders

Merle W. Sanders, 88, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Jane (Lookenbill) Sanders his wife of 62 years. Born July 28, 1929, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Clifford and Pauline (Leppo) Sanders. Merle was the owner-operator of Sanders Gulf in Hanover for many years, working in the auto business all his life and most recently at Stambaugh Auto Sales in Hanover. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, and was a life member of the Amvets, VFW, American Legion, Elks and Moose all of Hanover, and the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus and Home Association. Merle was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII and the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Wayne Lookenbill and wife Sandra of Hanover, Randy Sanders and wife Michele of Littlestown and Lori Rogers and husband Wim of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Mark Lookenbill, Ashley Sanders, Zachary and Kelsey Rogers; three great-grandchildren; three siblings, Jackie Zepp, Richard Sanders and Laverne Sanders all of Hanover. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jane Sanders and a brother, Raymond Sanders. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, December 7, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, with Rev. Ryan M. Fischer as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hanover, with the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing military honors. Friends and relatives will be received 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Thursday at St. Joseph Church. Memorial contributions in memory of Merle may be made to St. Joseph Church, 5055 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
