George F. Weaver

George F. Weaver, 95, of Gettysburg and formerly of McSherrystown, entered into God’s eternal care Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Gettysburg Hospital. He was the husband of Gladys A. (Wisler) Weaver who died July 7, 2011. Born November 15, 1921 in McSherrystown, he was the son of the late John W. and Bernadine (Horwedel) Weaver. George was a retired letter carrier from the US Postal Service with over 32 years of service. He was one of the two original letter carriers when the McSherrystown Post Office opened. He was a lifetime member of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown, a life member of McSherrystown Moose, McSherrystown Home Assoc., McSherrystown Fish and Game Assoc., SAVES, Hanover American Legion, Republican Club and VFW and Bonneauville CWV. George proudly served in the Army-Air Force servicing aircraft radios in Fairbanks, Alaska during WW II. George was proud to say that he was a five gallon blood donor and a consecutive 50 year voter. His most distinguished award was for his beard with the “Brothers of the Brush” for the 1963 McSherrystown Bicentennial. He enjoyed bus trips and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially his great-grandson to whom he bonded with his toy trains. Surviving are three children; Deborah Sanders of Gettysburg, Dawn Toddes and husband Ed of Gettysburg and Dennis Weaver and wife Mary Lynn of Littlestown, four grandchildren; Dana Tanabe, Kim Sanders, Courtney Weaver and Neal Weaver, one great-grandson; Ronin Tanabe and a brother-in-law; Edwin Dougherty and sister-in-law; Violet Mauss. He was preceded in death by four sisters; Catherine Poist, Helen Dougherty, Josephine Weaver and Angela Huff and a son-in-law; John R. Sanders. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday October 6, 2017 at Annunciation BVM Catholic Church, McSherrystown with Rev. Charles L. Persing as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Avenue, McSherrystown, with prayers at 8 p.m. Contributions in memory of George may be made to Red Cross Disaster Fund, 529 Carlisle Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
