William J. Butts

William J. Butts, 76, of Hanover, passed away Tuesday July 18, 2017 with his family by his side. He was the husband of Margaret “Peg” (Redcay) Butts to whom he was married 54 years. Born November 11, 1940 in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late William D. and Beatrice “Bea” (Fowler) Butts. Bill obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from Boston University, School of Communications. He worked most of his life as a retail manager and retired from the former Kings Department Store in Hanover. He was a member and past president of the former Parkville Fire Co. and is a current member of the Penn Township Relief Association, McSherrystown Fish and Game Association and was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons; Scott D. Butts and wife Tammy of Hanover and Daniel W. Butts and wife Teresa of Charleston, SC, four grandsons; Tyler and Collin Butts of Hanover and David and Matthew Butts of Charleston, SC. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Avenue, McSherrystown with Rev. Charles L. Persing officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover. Relatives and friends will be received Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to American Heart Association of South Central PA, 1019 Mumma Rd., Wormleysburg, PA 17043 or Boy Scouts of America, 1325 W. Walnut Hill Ln, Irving, TX 75038.
