George A. Gans

George A. Gans, 76, of McSherrystown, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the York Hospital surrounded by his family, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Jane E. (Little) Gans to whom he was married 45 years. Born February 12, 1941 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Grady) Gans. George was a member of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church in McSherrystown, McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, McSherrystown Home Assoc., and the Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg. He was a 1959 graduate of West Catholic High School, Philadelphia. After serving in the army from 1964 - 1966, George was employed as a Philadelphia police officer until 1972.  After moving to McSherrystown in 1972, George worked for several years at Tanger’s Hardware and then Robert G. Miller, Inc. until his retirement in 2006. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife, are two children, Paul Gans and wife Jennifer of Hanover and Thomas Gans and wife Hilary of York; three grandchildren, Kieran, Kylah and Maddox Gans; two sisters, Miriam Jones of Philadelphia and Nancy Gillespie of Sea Isle, NJ; a sister-in-law, Marie Gans of Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Gans and a nephew, George Gans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Annunciation Church in McSherrystown, with Rev. Charles L. Persing as celebrant. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, McSherrystown with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave. McSherrystown with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Gans, Thomas Gans, John Maysilles, Michael Maysilles, Brian Gillespie and Kevin Gillespie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg, P.O. Box 82 McSherrystown, PA 17344; Annunciation Church, 26 N.3rd St. McSherrystown, PA 17344; or to St. Rose of Lima School in honor of his grandchildren, 115 Biesecker Rd. Thomasville, PA 17364.
