Mary M. Smith

Mary M. “Mert” Smith, 88, of Edgegrove, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford with her family by her side. She was the wife of Gerald J. Smith who died March 1, 2013 and Carroll J. Staub Sr. who died March 7, 1969.  Born March 10, 1928 in Brushtown, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Helen E. (Wilt) Smith.  Mary had been employed with the former Victory Restaurant in Hanover. She was a 1946 graduate of Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown and was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove. Mert loved playing cards and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Surviving are eight children; Patricia Bittinger and husband Craig of Hanover, Carroll J. “Butch” Staub Jr. and wife Cheryl of Millersville, Jerome “Chewy” Staub and wife Diane of Hanover, Marie “Teen” Hermansen and husband Kris of York Springs, Kathleen “Kate” Staub of Hanover, Rita Staub of McSherrystown, John Staub of Hanover and Allen Staub and wife Missy of Abbottstown; four step-children; Benedict Smith and wife Diane of FL, Wayne Smith and wife Louise     of MD, Karen Porter of Spring Grove and Annette Zinn and husband Abe of Hanover; 18 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 7 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Welk and husband Harold “Reds” of Hanover. She was preceded in death by a daughter; Babara Staub, a granddaughter; Kelly Staub and seven siblings; Grace Neiderer, Ralph Smith, Gladys Staub, Clair, Elmer, Harold and Rodney Smith.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, with Rev. Lawrence J. NcNeil as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received Wednesday 6 to 8 pm at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown with prayers at 8 pm.  Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons.  Contributions in memory of Mert may be made to Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA 17331 or Delone Catholic High School, 140 S. Oxford Ave, McSherrystown, PA 17344.
