Richard J. Harkenrider

Richard J. “Harky” Harkenrider, 72, of Hanover entered into God’s eternal care on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.  Born in Hornell, NY, he was the son of the late Robert and Jessie (McKinley) Harkenrider.  Dick spent most of his life in Hornell where he was a machinist at SKF Industries for over 30 years. In addition to his job, Harky spent many years volunteering as an umpire and referee for youth sports. He was an avid sports fanatic who loved his Dallas Cowboys, NY Yankees and Nascar driver Rusty Wallace. His favorite pastime was golfing and bowling and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren and beloved animals. Following the closing of the SKF in Hornell, Dick and his family moved to Hanover, PA to continue working for the SKF Industries. Upon retirement, Dick also worked at RH Shephard and Hardees.  He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Abbottstown, a former member of St. Ann’s Church of Hornell, NY, The Association, VFW, Knights of Columbus of Hornell and McSherrystown, New Oxford Social Club, McSherrystown Moose, McSherrystown Home Association and American Legion. For his service to his country he enlisted upon graduation in the United States Air Force where he was a member of the 325 Cobat Specialist Group stationed in Tucson, AZ as an AP Military Policeman.  Surviving are his former wife and companion; Mary (Smith) Harkenrider, one son; William Harkenrider and his wife Nikki , three daughters; Angela Moir and her husband Robert, Lisa Harkenrider and her fiancée Chris Lawyer and Loni Homan and her husband Jason, "adopted son" Curt Newell; eight grandchildren, Josh and Kandyss Moir, Bobbi and Halli Nichols, Zachery and Richie Harkenrider and Noah and Trinity Homan, two great-grandchildren; Jaela Moir and baby Nichols due in June 2017, one brother Terry Harkenrider, three sisters; Joanne Palmesano, Sheila Day and her husband Jerimiah all of Hornell, NY and Patricia Scott of Fayettetville, NC and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother; Robert Joseph Harkenrider, brother-in-laws; Jess Scott and Philip Palmesano and a niece Theresa Palmesano.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 6084 W Canal Rd, Abbottstown, PA 17301 with Rev. Timothy D. Marcoe as celebrant.   Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover with military honors provided by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Monday 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Avenue, McSherrystown, with prayers at 8 p.m.  Contributions in memory of Dick may be made to the Organ Donation Group, Donate Life America. or the American Cancer Society of York/Adams, 924 Colonial Ave, Suite N, York, PA 17403.
