Janet Sarah Smith

Janet Sarah Smith, 78, of McSherrystown, passed away peacefully, Thursday, December 8, 2016 at her home following her courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Jude Smith to whom she was married 56 years. Born August 27, 1938 in McSherrystown she was the daughter of the late Guy and Genevieve (Strausbaugh) Groft. Janet worked at Sheridan Press in Hanover and was the owner of J.S. Smith in Old Gettysburg Village for 33 years. She was 1956 graduate of Delone Catholic High School and was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church both in McSherrystown. Janet loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed doing anything she could for them including attending school events, throwing parties, family beach vacations and celebrating Christmas. Surviving in addition to her husband are three children, Dave Smith and his wife Robin of Hanover, Lori Overmoyer and her husband Donald of New Oxford and Tracy Moorhead and her husband Rich of Hanover; seven grandchildren, Jesse Smith and his wife Caroline, Emily Smith, Madeline and Charles Overmoyer, and Genevieve, Scott and Lily Moorhead; four siblings, Marlene Aumen and Doris Staub both of Hanover, Mary Louise May of McSherrystown, and Grace Buffington of New Oxford; and a sister-in-law, Kay Hartlaub and her husband Ben of McSherrystown. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Stephanie and five siblings, Helen Higinbotham and James, Raymond, Francis and Richard Groft. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at Annunciation Catholic Church, McSherrystown, with Rev. Charles L. Persing as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Janet can be made to Hanover High School Four Diamonds Mini Thon, c/o Genevieve Moorhead, 401 Moul Ave., Hanover, PA 17331.

To the Smith family: It is with great sadness that we learned of Janet's passing. She bravely fought her illness with the sweet and gracious disposition we all loved.
