Edward O. Spangler

Sgt. Major - Edward O. “Bud” Spangler, 85, of McSherrystown, entered into God’s eternal care Friday, October 23, 2015, at Genesis Healthcare in Gettysburg. He was the husband of Toyoko (Ito) Spangler, his wife of 63 years. Born August 4, 1930, in McSherrystown, he was the son of Arlington E. and Geraldine H. (Lippy) Spangler. Ed was retired from the US Army after serving his country proudly for 30 years. His awards according to merit: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/1st oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal w/1st oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/1st oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal w/silver clasp & 10 loops, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. His decorations were: Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal w/1st oak leaf cluster, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 Device, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/palm. Ed had been a Boy Scout, a 1948 graduate of Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown and a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in McSherrystown. Ed was a life member of the VFW Post 6945, American Legion Post 14, Amvets Post 22, McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, McSherrystown Home Assoc. where he previously was a bartender, Hanover Home Assoc., Bonneauville CWV, Hanover Elks, Littlestown Eagles and the McSherrystown Moose. Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Katherine Spangler of McSherrystown and Patricia Pendleton of Washington, PA; three grandchildren, Nathan Miller and wife Melanie, Stephanie Kay and husband Aaron and Megan Pendleton; four great-grandchildren, Thomas and Madison Miller and Brayden and Hailee Kay; three siblings, Gloria Small of Hanover, Constance Hartlaub of McSherrystown and Marguerite Spangler of York. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille Wherley, Catherine Mehring Killeen and Mary Louise Slagle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Annunciation Church in McSherrystown. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Monday, at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with a prayer service at 8 pm. Contributions in memory of Ed may be made to Annunciation Church, 26 N.Third St., McSherrystown, PA 17344.
